The Alchemist- A review

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is a short and easy read, but that doesn’t diminish its impact. The book has a dreamy, poetic quality, and while simply written, it carries a deep, spiritual tone that leaves you yearning for more. It contrasts this depth by suggesting that perhaps we don’t need to search far for what we seek- maybe it’s right in front of us. It challenges our dichotomous thinking which leads us to believe that we cannot have it better than we already do.

The book follows the journey of Santiago, a young shepherd, who dares to abandon the familiarity of his flock- companions that have brought him comfort in his somewhat satisfactory life. His life offers him the freedom to travel, read, meet new people, and even fall in love. Yet, he leaves all that behind to seek the meaning behind his recurring dream about discovering a treasure.

As the saying goes, when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. At each step in Santiago’s journey, a teacher emerges, guiding him closer to his dream- what Paulo refers to as his ‘personal legend.’ Paulo suggests that each of us has a personal legend, and if we dare to pursue it, the universe will conspire to help us achieve it. Our heart knows this and pushes us at first. If we listen, it will guide us, but when fear of the unknown makes us ignore it, our heart eventually stops urging us towards our best selves, and we settle for the ordinary and safe.

Santiago’s tenacity is truly inspiring. The simplicity with which he navigates the challenges he faces makes you wonder if life is as complicated as we make it seem. The plot keeps you guessing till the end, just when you think Santiago has found his personal legend, new layers unfold, revealing Paulo’s message that our potential is limitless. Though Santiago is guided by his teachers, he carves his path in his own unique, simple way, inspiring you to always be authentic. The contrast throughout the story highlights our unique qualities and emphasizes the importance of following your heart and trusting that the universe will align in your favor.

In the end, we realize the treasure wasn’t just in the destination, but in the entire journey. The book leaves you questioning everything you think you know- are things as they seem, or is there a deeper meaning? The ball is now in our court: will we follow the omens that appear to guide us? Or will we align with others’ personal legends and ignore our own? Will we settle for safety, only to wonder later, ‘What if?’ Will we choose the safe path and then resent our loved ones for it? Will you take the leap of faith and chase your dream? The choices are limitless, and only when you let go of your fears will you discover your wings to fly.
