Job Description
Senior Accountant
Department: Finance & Administration
Reports To: Finance Manager
Location: Head Office – Namanve Industrial Park, Kampala, Uganda
Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: UGX 5,000,000+ per month (Negotiable based on experience) + Company Benefits
About the Company
Our client is the exclusive distributor of a leading motorcycle brand in Uganda. Founded in 2013, the company sells and distributes motorcycles and genuine spare parts to individuals, households, and corporate clients across Uganda, with a strong export footprint in spare parts to South Sudan, Rwanda, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Operating from a modern Head Office at the Namanve Industrial Park, the company combines a high-volume spare-parts trading business with a growing motorcycle distribution and after-sales service operation.
As the company continues to scale, the Finance & Administration function plays a central role in safeguarding margins, optimising working capital, and maintaining strong financial discipline in a fast-moving environment.
Job Purpose
The Senior Accountant leads the day-to-day operations of the accounting function and serves as the principal liaison between the finance team and the Finance Manager.
The role owns the integrity of the company’s books and records, the timeliness and accuracy of management and statutory reporting, the correctness of inventory and cost accounting in a high-SKU spare-parts and motorcycle business, and full compliance with Ugandan tax and regulatory requirements.
Reporting directly to the Finance Manager, the Senior Accountant supervises and develops the accounting team, ensures finance processes run reliably, and translates the Finance Manager’s directives into operational delivery for the team.
Key Responsibilities
1. Leadership, Liaison & Team Management
- Serve as the primary point of liaison between the accounting team and the Finance Manager — channelling team queries, status updates, and risks upwards, and translating directives into clear deliverables for the team.
- Supervise, coach, and develop accounting staff (Accountants, Stores / Inventory Accountant, and other team members), allocate workload, and conduct regular performance reviews.
- Run regular team meetings, set weekly priorities, and ensure team members are focused on the highest-value work.
- Review and sign off on the work of subordinate accountants before submission to the Finance Manager, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
- Identify capability gaps and recommend training, ERP capability building, and process improvements.
2. Financial Accounting, Reporting & Close
- Own the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close process, including the close calendar, sub-ledger reconciliations, accruals, prepayments, and journal sign-offs.
- Prepare and review financial statements (statement of financial position, profit or loss, cash flows, and supporting notes) in compliance with IFRS.
- Maintain the chart of accounts and the integrity of the general ledger; review and approve all material journal entries before posting.
- Prepare timely management accounts, variance analyses, and KPI dashboards for the Finance Manager and senior management.
- Coordinate the external audit process: prepare audit working papers, respond to auditor queries, and drive remediation of any audit findings.
3. Inventory, Cost Accounting & Margin Control
- Oversee inventory accounting and valuation for high-SKU spare parts, finished motorcycles, and work-in-progress, applying appropriate costing methods and obsolescence/slow-moving provisions.
- Coordinate periodic stock-takes across the Head Office warehouse and branch stores; investigate and resolve variances between physical counts and system records.
- Maintain accurate landed-cost accounting for imported motorcycles and parts — including freight, customs duties, taxes, clearing, and incidental charges.
- Track and report margin performance by product line (motorcycle models and spare-part categories), and flag adverse margin movements early.
- Support pricing decisions, promotional programmes, and warranty cost tracking with timely and accurate cost data.
4. Tax, Statutory & Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure full and timely compliance with all Ugandan tax obligations administered by URA, including VAT, Withholding Tax (WHT), Pay As You Earn (PAYE), Local Excise Duty, and corporate income tax.
- Oversee NSSF contributions, Local Service Tax, KCCA / district trading licences, and other statutory deductions, ensuring accurate calculation and on-time remittance.
- Manage import-related tax and customs obligations, including coordination with clearing agents on customs duties, VAT on imports, and pre-shipment requirements.
- Keep current with changes in tax law and regulatory practice in Uganda, advise the Finance Manager on implications, and ensure policies adapt accordingly.
- Act as the day-to-day liaison with URA officers, NSSF, and other regulators on routine queries.
5. Treasury, Cash Flow & Banking
- Oversee daily cash management, bank reconciliations, and the integrity of bank balances across all company accounts.
- Manage relationships with banking partners and process supplier payments, payroll runs, and statutory remittances within agreed turnaround times.
- Maintain accurate accounting and reconciliations for dealer-financing partner relationships (Centenary Bank, Equity Bank, Pride Bank, Tugende, Mogo, Watu, Asaak, Tayari, and Vuga Boda), ensuring monies received are correctly matched to motorcycle sales.
- Support short-term cash-flow forecasting with a focus on stock financing, supplier payment cycles, and import letters of credit.
- Oversee foreign-exchange-related accounting on USD imports and export receipts.
6. Internal Controls, Process & Risk
- Maintain and continuously improve accounting Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), with clear segregation of duties across requisitions, approvals, payments, posting, and reconciliations.
- Identify financial and operational risks (fraud, stock shrinkage, debtor concentration, cash-handling exposures) and implement preventive and detective controls.
- Oversee accounts payable and receivable cycles, including supplier reconciliations, customer credit limits, and overdue debtor follow-up.
- Drive the use and configuration of the accounting / ERP system to enforce controls and increase automation.
7. Cross-Functional Business Partnering
- Provide financial guidance to Sales, Procurement, Operations (Assembly / Stores), and After-Sales teams.
- Partner with Procurement on import planning, supplier evaluation, and cost-saving initiatives.
- Support After-Sales on warranty-cost tracking, spare-parts pricing, and dealer-network financial reporting.
- Contribute financial input to proposals for new products, branch openings, dealer-network expansion, and export opportunities.
